Lake Eyasi
About Lake Eyasi
A dry Rift Valley lake south of the Ngorongoro highlands, home to the Hadzabe, one of the last hunter-gatherer communities in Africa, and the Datoga pastoralists who live alongside them.
A morning with a Hadzabe family — walking, foraging and hunting with bow and arrow much as their ancestors did — is one of the most genuine cultural encounters on the northern circuit, run as a respectful visit rather than a staged performance. It pairs naturally with a Datoga blacksmith visit nearby.

Practical notes
- •Book through a guide who works with the same families regularly — it makes the visit more genuine, not less.
- •A half-day add-on, usually on the drive between Ngorongoro and Serengeti.
- •Respectful dress and a willingness to walk are all that is expected of you.
